Jacques was admitted as an attorney in 1989. After briefly leaving legal practice to operate a participation bond scheme, Jacques joined LMSL in 1990 and has been our senior partner since 2000.

Jacques is one of the top media lawyers in the country. Additionally, he is an expert on all commercial matters, laws relating to financial services, hedge funds and medical schemes, amongst other things.

Jacques is one of four founders of a company that produces software for medical schemes and still serves on its board of directors. Jacques has over the years served on various boards as director, audit committees and boards of trustees, currently, amongst others, a short-term insurance underwriter, a space exploration company and as the chairman of the board of South Africa’s largest hedge fund management company.

When not in the office, you’re likely to find Jacques on a squash court or in his workshop at home.

Pieter van der Riet

Pieter is an experienced litigator with a particular interest in insolvency, and general and commercial litigation matters. He also manages a large estates practice. After completing his articles with the firm in 1994, Pieter became a partner in 1998. Pieter wears a second hat as the firm’s managing partner, keeping a steady hand on the operations.

Pieter van der Riet

Pieter acts for one of the largest printing businesses in the country and other companies whom he represents in commercial recovery matters. He is highly regarded as a correspondent attorney for firms countrywide, with his knowledge of our local courts and procedures. Pieter further serves as a trustee on the board of various trusts and as director of a non-profit company in the education sector.

A family man as well as a firm believer of “a healthy mind in a healthy body”, Pieter can often be found setting the pace in the gym.

Leroy Villet

Leroy completed his articles in 2010 and joined Jacques and Pieter in partnership in 2015. Leroy practises in both the commercial and litigation fields.

Leroy Villet

Leroy’s clients include prominent persons and production companies whom he advises in media and entertainment law related matters, transport and logistics businesses and private individuals with property interests.  Leroy served as the trustee of a medical scheme for four years and on management committees of sport clubs and body corporates.

Over weekends Leroy enjoys spending time surfing, or if the ocean is not playing along, look out for him next to a cricket or rugby field with his two sons and daughter.

Laura Nicholson

Laura is an Attorney, Notary, and Conveyancer and joined the firm in 2021 to run the Conveyancing department. Laura is a mother of three daughters and her hobbies include property speculation and house flipping.

Russel Manuel

Russel completed his articles in 2021 at the firm and was retained as associate attorney. Russel practices in both the commercial and litigation fields. Over weekends Russel enjoys sport and is an avid wine connoisseur.
